Emily Carr
British Columbia born artist and writer, Emily Carr, painted the skies, forests and First Nations cultures of the Pacific Northwest in a style noted for its intense energy and shimmering light. She was born in 1871 in Victoria, British Columbia, to a respectful family that lived on Government Street. Presently this house, now known as Carr House, is a tourist attraction visited by thousands each year.
Carr studied art in San Francisco and England, and visited France from 1910-1911. It was in the remote First Nations villages of her home province that she found creative inspiration, documenting poles and people in their natural context.
